I hope this email finds you well. In our recent class, we delved into a controversial and sensitive topic from the lens of Jewish values. A recording of last nights class can be found here.
The Nature of a Fetus: After exploring the matter deeply, we learned that the Talmud indicates that a fetus possesses both a body and a soul. Nonetheless, it is not entirely equivalent to a complete human being.
Abortion according to Jewish Law: We discovered that, according to Jewish law, terminating a pregnancy is a grave matter and generally forbidden. However, when a mother’s life is at risk, it may become a halachic obligation. We discussed the differing perspectives of halachic authorities regarding the permissibility of ending a pregnancy in other extreme circumstances, such as severe genetic disease. We also explored the halachic opinion that allows for greater leniency during the first forty days after conception.
We look forward to joining you at the last class in the Decisions of Fate series, taking place on a special night - Thursday, June 6th at 7:15pm at The Shul.
Warm regards,
Rabbi Cheski Edelman
