The festival of Purim commemorates the Divinely orchestrated salvation of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day.”
The mitzvot of Purim include giving charity (tzedekah) to the poor, hearing the megillah, giving gifts of food, and sharing a festive holiday meal.
It is a mitzvah to hear the Megillah twice! Once on the first night (Thursday Night, March 13th), and again the next day (Friday, March 14th)!
